Halifax, NS – [October 29, 2024] - Elham Afshari, a PhD candidate at Dalhousie University, has officially launched NexaPowder, a groundbreaking startup focused on producing sustainable, high-quality metal powders made from recycled materials. This innovative venture aims to address the increasing demand for customizable, eco-friendly solutions in industries such as aerospace, healthcare, and tooling.
NexaPowder’s inception stemmed from Elham’s research during her doctoral studies, where she identified a significant gap in the market for affordable and sustainable metal powders. Motivated by a desire to solve real-world challenges surrounding sustainability, she leveraged her expertise in metal 3D printing to create a product that not only meets industry needs but also contributes to waste reduction and energy conservation.
Elham credits her success to the robust support system at Dalhousie University. “My supervisor, Dr. Ali Nasiri, has been incredibly supportive,” she said. “He introduced me to Dalhousie’s entrepreneurship resources, which have been instrumental in transforming my vision into reality.” Key programs, such as Dal Innovates Lab2Market Launch and ideaDESIGN by Emera ideaHUB, provided Elham with the tools to develop her business strategy and refine her product.
Recently, Elham participated in Dalhousie’s Dal Demo Day, where she pitched NexaPowder for the first time in a formal setting. Her presentation highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability and the innovative use of recycled materials. Securing third place in the competition served as both a validation of her efforts and a stepping stone for future growth. “The positive feedback I received about our approach reinforced my confidence and commitment to this mission,” she shared.
Now, as Elham embarks on the next phase of her entrepreneurial journey through the ideaBUILD program at Emera ideaHUB, she aims to advance both the technology and business strategy behind NexaPowder. The program offers access to advanced prototyping facilities and expert mentorship, essential for preparing the startup for commercialization.
Elham encourages fellow PhD students and researchers to embrace their entrepreneurial aspirations. “Step out of your academic comfort zone and engage with potential customers early. Building relationships with mentors and industry leaders is crucial,” she advised. “Persistence is key; navigating the path from research to commercialization can be challenging, but it’s worth it.”
With NexaPowder poised for growth, Elham looks forward to making a significant impact in the metal 3D printing industry while championing sustainability.
